{"id":6302,"date":"2022-03-31T15:40:17","date_gmt":"2022-03-31T15:40:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kubepartners.com\/?p=6302"},"modified":"2022-04-01T12:26:59","modified_gmt":"2022-04-01T12:26:59","slug":"0803","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kubepartners.com\/it\/0803\/","title":{"rendered":"Women in STEM: towards gender parity in the IT sector"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p class=\"Body\"><b><span lang=\"EN-US\">The global scenario<\/span><\/b><b><\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"Body\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">R<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">ecent decades <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">have seen<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> significant progress in <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">the <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">feminis<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">ation of<\/span><span lang=\"DE\"> STEM (<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics)<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> faculties<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">. This<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> has <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">helped<\/span> <span lang=\"EN-US\">to <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">strengthen women&#8217;s inclusion in the labour market<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> &#8211;<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> including the IT industry<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> &#8211; <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">facilitat<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">ing<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> career progression <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">for women <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">and <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">improving<\/span> <span lang=\"EN-US\">their <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">expectations <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">of professional success and <\/span><span lang=\"ES-TRAD\">personal fulfilment<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"Body\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">But a gender gap remains, and e<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">stimated figures show that<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> the gap in<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> IT is not specific to <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">any<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> one <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">region<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">. It is a global phenomenon. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"Body\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">According to the U.S. Census Bureau, women are still vastly underrepresented in STEM <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">jobs <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">in the States. <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Their share of this workforce has<\/span> <span lang=\"EN-US\">grown<\/span> <span lang=\"EN-US\">considerably, <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">from <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">just <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">8%<\/span> <span lang=\"EN-US\">in 1970 to 27% in 2019<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">, <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">but men still dominate th<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">e<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> field<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">,<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">mak<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">ing<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> up 73% of all STEM employees<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> (compared to<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> 52% of the U.S. workforce <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">as a whole)<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"Body\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Meanwhile in the European Union, o<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">nly 17% of the almost 8 million IT specialists are women (EIGE study, 2021).<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"Body\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">On the positive side, <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">the demand for STEM professionals is expected to grow by 8%<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> annually <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">between 2013 and 2025<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">, well ahead of the 3% <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">average growth forecast for all occupations. With the IT workforce ageing rapidly, replacement workers need to be trained up<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">.<\/span> <span lang=\"EN-US\">As<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> women in the E.U. make up the majority of graduates from tertiary education<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">, this represents a great<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> opportunity to redress the gender imbalance in the IT sector<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"Body\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"Body\"><b><span lang=\"EN-US\">The situation in Italy and Milan<\/span><\/b><b><\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"Body\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Although<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> women&#8217;s education levels are higher than men&#8217;s<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> in Italy<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">, the national employment rate for women is much lower<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">:<\/span> <span lang=\"EN-US\">just <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">56.1%<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">,<\/span> <span lang=\"EN-US\">compared to<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> 76.8%<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> for men (b<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">ased on<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> 2019 data from<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> ISTAT<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">, the <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Italian National Institute of Statistics<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">)<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"Body\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">What&#8217;s more, when it comes to studying for STEM jobs, Italian women are significantly underrepresented, making up only 36% of all students<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> enrolled in<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> STEM degree<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> courses<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">. Focusing on Milanese universities, t<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">he share of <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">women<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> is\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">even lower, at just<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> 30%<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> of <\/span><span lang=\"DE\">STEM <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">students<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"Body\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"Body\"><b><span lang=\"DE\">Kube Partners<\/span><\/b><b><\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"Body\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Kube Partners has made great strides in this area. Despite <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">the<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> pandemic, the team has <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">more than doubled<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> in the last three years, and 25% of the group are women.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"Body\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Lorena Liuzzo, who joined the company in December 2020 <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">as a data scientist, <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">has quickly become a vital team member. <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">After earning<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> a PhD in Hydraulics and Environmental Engineering<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">, Lorena first<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> embarked on a career<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> in academia<\/span> <span lang=\"EN-US\">before<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> approach<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">ing<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> the world of IT.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"Body\"><span lang=\"RU\">&#8220;<\/span><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">Having chosen a <\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">male-dominated faculty<\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">, I know that the path for a woman <\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">in <\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">engineering is not as simple as it is for those who study humanities. <\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">G<\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">ender-based obstacles exist; the credibility of a male engineer is much higher than that of a woman perform<\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">ing<\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-US\"> the same job, with <\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">t<\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">he same qualifications and skills. Joining a company like Kube Partners has allowed me to be perceived simply as a professional, <\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">no different<\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-US\"> from my male colleagues.<\/span><\/i><span lang=\"RU\">&#8220;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"Body\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Greta Canziani, a graduated in Statistics and Economics who has worked <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">in Kube as a Software Developer<\/span> <span lang=\"EN-US\">since 2019<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">, tells a similar story.<\/span><span lang=\"RU\"> &#8220;<\/span><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">I wanted to <\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">find a job that <\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">combine<\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">d<\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-US\"> my passion for mathematics with <\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">the chance<\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-US\"> to grow and become independent quickly<\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">,&#8221; <\/span><\/i><span lang=\"EN-US\">she explains<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">.<\/span><i> <\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">&#8220;<\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">My first work experience in a large corporat<\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">ion<\/span><\/i><i> <\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">exposed<\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-US\"> me <\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">to<\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-US\"> the difference in perception between m<\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">e <\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">and my male colleagues. When I <\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">first <\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">came to Kube Partners, I was afraid of moving to a much smaller <\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">company<\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">. Here you are considered first and foremost as a professional, where what <\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">counts is what <\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">you can do<\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">.<\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-US\"> Being part of a small team <\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">also <\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">means I can learn<\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-US\"> through<\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-US\"> direct contact with<\/span><\/i><i> <\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">senior colleagues.<\/span><\/i><span lang=\"RU\">&#8220;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"Body\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"Body\"><b><span lang=\"EN-US\">What the future holds<\/span><\/b><b><\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"Body\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Despite the slow<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> pace<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> of<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> progress in<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> bridging the gender gap <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">in both the academic and <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">work<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> environments<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">, the future looks bright.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"Body\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">A few weeks ago, the Italian Minister <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">for <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Universit<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">ies<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> and Research, Maria Cristina Messa, introduced two measures to support women in the fight against gender inequalities, namely more scholarships for girls wanting to study STEM subjects and mobility support<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">:<\/span><span lang=\"RU\"> &#8220;<\/span><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">We are <\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">increasing scholarships for the most capable and deserving, in particular with an increase of 20% <\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">i<\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">n scholarships for women who are signing up for STEM degrees <\/span><\/i><span lang=\"RU\">&#8220;<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">, she stated<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"Body\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Meanwhile Elena Bonetti, <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Minister for Equal Opportunities and the Family<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">, expressed her vision as follows: <\/span><span lang=\"RU\">&#8220;<\/span><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">Investing in education, training and enhancement of women also in the scientific field, plus removing any barrier or stereotype that unfortunately still exists today<\/span><\/i><span lang=\"EN-US\">&#8220;<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"Body\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"Body\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Kube Partners is following <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">such<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> developments with interest and continues to <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">work towards<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> gender equality in the IT sector<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">, for example by collaborating with the Politecnico di Milano and CEFRIEL (Center for Digital Innovation and International Research, based in Milan).
